What is Energy Medicine?

Energy medicine is a way to improve health by utilizing the energy present in the body and augmenting that energy to promote healing.  It includes one of several modalities, characterized by the movement of energy in the body.

First used thousands of years ago, in India and China, energy medicine is probably most familiar in the modalities of acupuncture, yoga, Reiki, and Qi Gong.  However, in the last few decades, energy medicine has grown tremendously.  Newer methods include applied kinesiology, NAET, EFT, and BodyTalk.

Central to the theory of energy medicine is the concept that the human being is not just a body but a complex matrix made up of biological, psychological, spiritual and energetic components.  As such,  disease is not just a pathology of the body; rather, disease is a combination of energetic blockages that may be caused by physiological problems but usually is also caused by emotional or psychological factors.  Certainly, if not the primary cause, they most likely will be secondary or tertiary.  Treating the "whole being" includes taking into account all aspects of that person's life.

In most modalities, energy medicine includes a combination of one or more of the following techniques:

●      applied kinesiology (muscle testing or muscle checking, in which neuromuscular biofeedback alerts the practitioner to specific information about the patient)

●      tapping on the head, back, or chest (to reset the brain by interrupting the energetic flow in order to change the patient's relationship with a specific substance)

●      the repetition of specific verbal phrases designed to change a person's relationship with a specific belief

●      breathing techniques

●      visualizations

●      the placing of hands on one or more specific parts of the body
